Barcelona is changing its relationship with the bicycle; the city has come to love the bicycle and encourages cycling and currently offers up 120 kilometres of bicycle paths. But it's not all fun and games. The bicycle, despite of its unquestionable contribution to urban culture, continues to be discriminated against, and urban cycling still claims its martyrs who fall victim to aggressive car traffic. Here are the seven commandments for the good urban cyclists, who lock their bikes properly and brave the streets to enjoy the wind in their face.
...........................................................................................................................................
Don't get in the way of pedestrians, especially where there is no room for the bike. Avoid the Rambla, avoid Passeig de Gracia, avoid the crowds in Portal del Angel, and take care not to run into inattentive pedestrians or beggars.
...........................................................................................................................................
Always lock the bike to something, even if you're just going for a quick bite, or popping in and out of a shop. Always lock the bicycle frame to something, and pull the lock through the wheel, preferably use parking facilities provided by the city council, we can tell you where these facilities are.
...........................................................................................................................................
Respect the traffic codes, even if you don't believe these rules were written with the bicycle in mind.
...........................................................................................................................................
Respect and take care of your bicycle and learn the ABC's of bicycle maintenance. How to adjust the brakes, lubricate the chain, and maintain the tyres.
...........................................................................................................................................
You shall not covet other people's bicycles.
...........................................................................................................................................
Don't be afraid to use the bell, the bell does not pollute or harass people but warns and lets them know you're coming.
...........................................................................................................................................
Whenever you can, cycle on the right side of the road, close to the pavement. Do not go up on the pavement to avoid fast cars, rather go near the centre of the road - the driver can then see you and slow down.
